My series of Gates started with the desire to manifest a place I had imagined: a gated tunnel. I envisioned this fictitious space as a dead end; a space that used light to pull you through towards a barrier. My process has utilized illustration, 3D printing, and traditional sculpture techniques to create constructed environments that I then document as photographs; spontaneous sketches become extruded 3D prints, wrapped in paper and lumpy glue. Ultimately I photograph these constructions as if they were real. I want these spaces to be tactile and yet unreal, magical and gritty; they are my efforts to deal with problems of place and experience in photography by seeking to evoke the experience of movement through fictional, uncanny spaces.
